Maritime contracts are among the most operationally complex agreements in global commerce. BIMCO model contracts — SHIPMAN, SUPPLYTIME, BARECON, GUARDCON, Norwegian Saleform - define who is responsible for what across owners, managers, charterers, insurers, and port authorities. But the obligations themselves are executed entirely outside the contract. Someone has to remember, chase, check, and prove.
In 2025, over 33,000 contracts were generated through BIMCO's SmartCon platform by nearly 1,800 companies across every major maritime region. Each one carries the same structural gap: rich legal obligations, no operational layer to perform them.
Hunit closes this gap. Under BIMCO's inaugural Agentic Contract programme, members continue to negotiate and customise contracts in SmartCon as they do today. Instead of exporting a final PDF, they export an Agentic Contract. On digital signature, the agreement activates on Hunit's permissioned network and begins operating as a live system.
What this means in practice: passage plans are recorded and approvals requested automatically. Sanctions checks run and are logged without chasing. Insurance verifications are confirmed before departure. Payment release is held until all required permissions are in place. Every step is time-stamped, role-attributed, and visible to authorised parties — building an audit trail that exists because the work was done, not because someone assembled a file after the fact.
For ship managers, this means fewer missed steps and faster response in time-critical situations. For owners and insurers, it means a shared, audit-grade record of what happened and when. For BIMCO, it means widespread adoption of model agreements translates into measurable, recurring value - rather than uncontrolled replication.
Agentic Contracts do not replace the legal agreement. They make it perform.
